We all are aware of frequency tables. The variable in the frequency table can be either qualitative or quantitative. In case of quantative variables or those qualititative variables which can be measured quantitatively the information contained in the raw data, or in the associated frequency table can also be presented by the means of few numerical values. Methods providing such values are called measures of central tendency (or averages) and the numerical value obtained is called an average or central value.
An average or a central value of a data or a statistical series is the value of the variable which describes the characteristics of the entire data or the associated frequency distribution. In other words, an average of a distribution is the value of the variable which is representative of the entire distribution. Such value is of great significance because it depicts the characteristics of the entire data. Since an average represents the entire data, therefore its value lies somewhere in between two extremes i.e. the largest and smallest items. This is the reason why an average is called a measure of location or a measure of Central Tendency.
