Addition Using a Number Line

Introduction to addition using number line:

Number line a representation of number in a single line. Number line includes both positive values and negative values. O is placed on a center of a number line. Number line makes easy for a student to understand the numbers. Addition of numbers using a number line makes the concept of addition easily. By making a count from first addend we can get an addition value.

Representation of Addition Using a Number Line:

A neutral center value has no sign hence it is in the center of number line. Positive number are present at the right side of 0 and negative numbers are present at the left side of 0.

Process of addition using a number line:

Addition is the arithmetic operation of adding a sum of digits. The numbers going to add are called addend.

Steps for addition of two numbers using a number line:

Addition using a number line should be processed from  left to right.

Step 1:

First addend is marked on a number line.

Step 2:

Make a count from a marked addend and go to nest digit until your count reaches the next addend value.

Step 3:

The number where you get a count of second addend is the resultant value of addition.

The same procedures should be followed for negative numbers.

Example Problems for Addition Using a Number Line:

Example: 1

Perform addition on the numbers 56 with 3 using a number line.

Solution:

Given numbers are 56, 3

Step 1:

First addend is marked on a number line.

Step 2:

Make a count from 56 and go to next digit.

Step 3:

Stop counting after getting a count of second addend. The present value is the addition result.

The answer of the given addition of numbers is 59.

Example: 2

Perform addition on the numbers -8 with 2 using a number line.

Solution:

Given numbers are -8,  2

Step 1:

First addend is marked on a number line.

Step 2:

Make a count from -8 and go to next digit.

Step 3:

Stop counting after getting a count of second addend. The present value is the addition result.
