The Method of Solving Problems Relating To Proportion

The term ratio represents a fraction. Fraction can be proper as well as improper. Understanding fractions will help us in the understanding of the term ratio. Once the term ratio is clear one can start solving proportion word problems and have better understanding of the concept. Now the question how to solve proportion has to be solved and only then the problems based on this concept can be solved. They are quite simple and just require the basic understanding. The process of solving proportion problems is simple and can be understood if the concepts are clear.

Proportion actually denotes the relation between smaller parts and the whole part. They are usually used to represent the equality of two fractions or also called ratios. The equality can be represented by an ‘equal to’ symbol or can also be represented by two colons together. After writing the two fractions together and separating them by the ‘equal to’ sign their cross-products can be taken. The speciality of this will be that both will be equal. If one of the terms of the fraction or the ratio is not known then it can be found by using this multiplication technique. It can be explained with the help of an example. If the ratios 4/x and 16/9 are equivalent then the value of the term ‘x’ has to be found out. For this first we write them using the ‘equal to’ sign. So they can be written in the form 3/x=12/16. Now the process of cross-multiplication has to be done. ‘X’ has to be multiplied with 12 and 16 has to be multiplied with 3. Now the products we get are 16x and 36. From this the value of ‘x’ can be found out.

So, this can be very helpful in solving various problems of this type. In many problems there can be missing terms like this. This concept can be very helpful in finding these missing terms. If in the equation the terms on each side can be divided by the same term. When this is done, the values of terms on the either side of the equation will not change. This is also an important concept. Both these concepts of cross-multiplication and division can be very helpful in the finding of the missing term in the ratio equation. So, basically when the two ratios are equivalent this technique is used.
