In a simple fractions word problems we have the data’s in words for that we have to read the given problems very carefully . In this section we are going to see word problems using simple fractions. Generally the fraction is a ratio of two numbers and fraction is defined as part of a group or a region. In fraction are classified into following types
Proper fractions
Improper fractions
Mixed fractions.
Types of Simple Fraction in Word Problems:
Proper fraction:
Proper fraction said to be the denominator shows the number of parts into which the whole divided and numerator shows the number of parts we taken out.
Example ` 9/10,1/2`
Improper Fractions:
Improper fractions defined as numerator is bigger than denominator are called improper fractions.
Example `5/3,7/2`
Mixed Fractions:
A mixed fraction is defined as the combination of a whole and a part.
Example `2 3/5, 7 2/9,`

Word Problems using simple Fractions:
Example 1:
Tom has `1/4` breads in his plate and Leo has `2/4` breads in his plate. Who has more breads in his plate and how many breads both have?
Solution:
Tom has `1/4` breads and Leo has `2/4`
Total breads both haves = ` 1/4+ 2/4`
= `3/4` Breads
Example 2:
Tony had `5/6` of a cake. he gave `2/6` out of that to his brother Jerry. How much cake is left with him?
Solution:
Tony had `5/6` of cake from that `2/6` of cake he gave to his brother Jerry
We find that `5/6-2/6` =`(5-2)/6` =`3/6` = `1/3`
Example 3:
Carol bought ` 2/5` meter of ribbon and Jenny bought `1/5 ` meter of ribbon. What is the total length of the ribbon they bought?
Solution:
Carol bought `2/5` and jenny bought `1/5` of ribbon
Total length they bought = `2/5+1/5`
= `3/5`
Example 4:
Kate was given 1 ` 1/3` piece of cake and Amy was given 4 `1/3 ` piece of cake. Find the total amount of cake was given to both of them.
Solution:
Kate got 1 `1/3` and Amy got 4 `1/3` piece of cake
Total amount = `1 1/3 + 4 1/3`
= `4/3+13/3`
= `17/3`
